What is schema markup?
Schema markup is a small block of code (usually JSON-LD) that tells search engines exactly what's on a page: this is a product, this is its price, it's in stock, this is the store that sells it. It's what makes rich results possible — prices, stock and review stars under your link in Google — and it helps AI search tools understand your store too.
Which schema types does a Shopify store need?
- Product on every product page — name, image, price, currency and availability.
- Organization once, on the homepage — your name, logo and social profiles.
- BreadcrumbList on products and collections — shows the page's place in your store.
- FAQPage on pages with a real, visible FAQ section.
Check before you add it
Most Shopify themes already output some Product schema, and review apps often add their own. Two different Product blocks for the same item can confuse Google. Test your page first; if schema is already there, fix or extend that one instead of adding a second copy.
Only mark up what's true and visible on the page. Never add review ratings you don't actually have — Google treats that as spam and can remove your rich results.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what people ask most.
What is JSON-LD schema markup?
JSON-LD is a format for structured data that tells search engines what a page contains — like a product, its price and availability. Google recommends JSON-LD over other formats.
Does Shopify add schema automatically?
Most Shopify themes add some basic Product schema, but it is often incomplete. Test your page in Google's Rich Results Test before adding more, so you do not end up with two conflicting Product blocks.
Where do I paste the schema code in Shopify?
The easiest way is a Custom Liquid section on the page in the theme editor. For site-wide Organization schema, paste it into theme.liquid or a snippet included on the homepage.
Will schema markup improve my rankings?
Schema is not a direct ranking factor, but it makes your pages eligible for rich results like prices and stock status, which can improve how many people click your listing.
Can I add review stars with this generator?
Only if you have real reviews that are visible on the page. Adding ratings you do not have breaks Google's guidelines and can get your rich results removed.
Is the schema generator free?
Yes — free, no sign-up, and it runs entirely in your browser.
