How to use the SERP preview tool
Three steps to a search result people actually click.
Paste your title & description
Copy them from the "Search engine listing" box at the bottom of any Shopify product, collection, page or blog post.
Check the preview & score
See exactly where Google would cut your text on desktop, then work through the red and orange checks.
Copy it back to Shopify
Paste the improved title and description into Shopify and save. Google updates the result the next time it crawls the page.
Why your title and meta description matter
Your title tag is the blue link in Google, and it's one of the clearest signals of what a page is about. Your meta description is the grey text under it. It doesn't directly change rankings, but it decides whether people click your result or the one next to it.
How long should a meta title be?
Google cuts titles by pixel width, not characters — roughly 580–600 px on desktop. That's usually 50–60 characters, but a title full of wide letters like "W" and "M" gets cut sooner. Put your main keyword near the start so it survives the cut.
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for about 120–160 characters. Google often shows around 920 px on desktop and a little more on mobile. Say what the page offers, who it's for, and give a reason to click.
Where to edit them in Shopify
- Products, collections, pages, blog posts: open the item and scroll to Search engine listing → Edit.
- Homepage: Online Store → Preferences → Title and meta description.
Google sometimes rewrites titles and descriptions to match a search better. Clear, accurate text that matches the page makes that much less likely.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what people ask most.
What is a SERP preview tool?
A SERP preview tool shows how your page will look in Google search results — the title, URL and meta description — so you can fix text that gets cut off before you publish.
How many characters should a meta title be?
Keep it around 50–60 characters. Google actually cuts titles by pixel width (about 580–600 px on desktop), so this tool measures pixels as well as characters.
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for about 120–160 characters. Put the most important point first, because Google may cut or rewrite longer descriptions.
Why does Google show a different title than mine?
Google sometimes rewrites titles and descriptions when it thinks another piece of text matches the search better. Clear, accurate titles that match the page content get rewritten less often.
Where do I change the SEO title in Shopify?
Open the product, collection, page or blog post and scroll to "Search engine listing", then click Edit. For the homepage, go to Online Store → Preferences.
Is this tool free?
