Barcodes and SKUs — two different jobs
A barcode is what a scanner reads at checkout. A SKU is your own internal code for tracking stock.
Barcode = EAN-13 / UPC-A
A numeric, scannable code, usually assigned by GS1 or your supplier. Paste it in to generate a print-ready image.
SKU = your own code
Any letters and numbers you choose, used in Shopify's inventory and your own records — not scanned at checkout by default.
Use both together
Give every variant a SKU for tracking, and a barcode if you sell in a physical store or use barcode scanners for stock counts.
EAN-13 vs. UPC-A
EAN-13 (13 digits) is used almost everywhere outside North America. UPC-A (12 digits) is the US/Canada standard and is technically an EAN-13 with a leading zero — this tool generates a correct check digit for either.
Adding a barcode to a Shopify product
In Shopify Admin, open a product's variant, and paste the code into the Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN, etc.) field. This is separate from the SKU field — Shopify stores both, and POS/scanner apps read the barcode field.

What's the difference between a barcode and a SKU?
A barcode (EAN-13/UPC-A) is a standardized, scannable code read by checkout and inventory scanners. A SKU is your own internal code for tracking stock — any letters and numbers you choose.
Can I make up my own EAN-13 number?
You can, and this tool will generate a valid, correctly-checksummed barcode image for it — but it won't be a registered product with GS1 or scannable as "your" product at another retailer's checkout. For a real, resellable product, get a GS1-registered code or one from your supplier.
Where do I put the barcode in Shopify?
On a product variant in Shopify Admin, paste it into the "Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN, etc.)" field — this is separate from the SKU field.
Can I generate SKUs for a whole product list at once?
Yes — switch to the "Bulk SKU" tab and paste one product per line (with an optional variant), and it builds a consistent SKU for every row, ready to copy into Shopify or a spreadsheet.

No — barcodes are drawn on a canvas in your browser and SKUs are built with plain JavaScript. Nothing is sent to a server.
